The Hidden Epidemic — Why Vitamin B12 Deficiency Deserves Your Attention

By Sinead O’Connor | In Conversation with Annie Barr, MBE

This week, I had the privilege of hosting a live session with an extraordinary woman — Annie Barr, MBE. With over 35 years of nursing experience in the NHS, Annie is a powerhouse of knowledge, compassion, and action. She is also Chair of the B12 Society, a UK charity supporting over 74,000 people navigating the complexities of Vitamin B12 deficiency.

We sat down to have a raw and informative conversation that shook me to my core — and I believe everyone needs to hear this.

The Shocking Truth About Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Before I took Annie’s course on pernicious anemia and B12 deficiency, I understood B12 as “just another vitamin.” But what I learned blew the lid off that assumption. This isn’t a niche problem. It’s a hidden epidemic — quietly robbing people of their health, mental clarity, and even mobility.

Annie has seen firsthand how B12 deficiency can mimic or contribute to:

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Memory loss and brain fog

  • Neurological disorders like Parkinson’s or MS

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Cardiovascular risk (due to high homocysteine)

  • Postnatal depression

  • Even loss of eyesight

Let that sink in. This is not mild. This is life-altering, and often entirely preventable or reversible.

How Annie Discovered the B12-Mental Health Link

Annie’s journey began decades ago while working in psychiatric care. She noticed a disproportionate number of patients with neurological and psychological symptoms who also had low B12 or pernicious anemia (an autoimmune form of B12 deficiency). Back in the 1980s, with no internet and limited research access, her observations sat quietly — until years later, she picked up the thread again and committed herself to change.

Today, she trains healthcare professionals, writes accredited courses, and runs awareness campaigns through the B12 Society. And her message is crystal clear: this isn’t rare — it’s just rarely diagnosed properly.

Why Are So Many People Deficient?

There are multiple reasons:

  • Dietary deficiency (especially common among vegans or vegetarians)

  • Malabsorption, due to autoimmune issues like pernicious anemia

  • Gut inflammation, which disrupts intrinsic factor production

  • Chronic medications that deplete B12

  • Lack of proper testing or awareness among GPs

What’s worse? Many GPs still don’t run the full panel of tests needed to identify it — like homocysteine, active B12, or methylmalonic acid. Often, only serum B12 is checked, which may miss functional deficiencies.

B12 and Mental Health — The Science

There’s a direct correlation between low B12 and poor mental health. Why?

Because B12:

  • Supports neurotransmitter production

  • Helps regulate homocysteine, which impacts mood and heart health

  • Is vital for the myelin sheath, the protective layer around your nerves

  • Is involved in DNA and RNA synthesis — literally your body’s genetic health

When B12 is low and homocysteine is high, it can wreak havoc on the brain, mood, cognition, and even cardiovascular risk.

A Real-Life Case That Will Stop You in Your Tracks

Annie shared a jaw-dropping example:
A woman in a leadership role was quietly going blind — so much so that she was secretly delegating tasks she could no longer see to complete. She asked for a B12 injection for general well-being… and her full eyesight returned in 20 minutes. It didn’t last, but with consistent supplementation, she now self-injects weekly and is thriving.

Let that be your wake-up call.

Who Should Pay Attention?

If you or someone you know experiences:

  • Brain fog

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Low mood

  • Neurological symptoms (tingling, numbness, balance issues)

  • Poor concentration

  • Memory issues

  • Digestive inflammation

  • Long-standing vegan/vegetarian diets

… you owe it to yourself to get tested — properly.

What Should You Do Next?

  1. Use the Symptom Checker
Head to www.b12d.org to access a free B12 symptom questionnaire.

  2. Ask for the Right Tests

    • Active B12

    • Homocysteine

    • Folate

    • Ferritin / Iron

    • Full Blood Count

  3. Know Your Options
If absorption is impaired (e.g., pernicious anemia), oral supplements may not work. Alternatives include:

    • Intramuscular injections

    • Sublingual (under-the-tongue) tablets

    • Nasal sprays

    • Transdermal patches

  4. Get Empowered, Not Dismissed
If you’re told “your bloods are fine” but you don’t feel fine, trust your gut. Push for further investigation. You know your body best.

The Bottom Line

We don’t have to accept poor health as “normal.” And we certainly shouldn’t accept misdiagnosis or dismissiveness when something as simple as B12 could change a life.

Annie and I are passionate about one thing:
Helping people take control of their health.
We’ll be back with more live sessions, resources, and support — because this information can change lives.

If you’d like the symptom checker PDF or help interpreting your results, send me a message. Let’s start the conversation that might just turn things around for you.

To clarity, vitality, and health that makes sense,

Sinead x
